At the same time, there was plenty of debate about where to put the second stage of the Energiewende - the shift to zero-carbon economy. There have been discussions about making the transition faster, but how quickly can that happen?
As I wrote in my Sunday Telegraph article, there is a consensus that if the transition can take place, then it does, and that the energy efficiency gains from the Energiewende should be matched by investment in building renewable energy and switching to cleaner transport and manufacturing.
In the UK it is clear that with the election of a Labour government, and with many on the Conservative right taking a stronger stance on climate, we should expect to see much more in the way of new measures to fight the effects of climate change than were introduced on the government's first day in power.
The new Chancellor of the Exchequer is David Cameron. The party leader will put his money where his mouth is. We should expect a lot more in the way of pledges to invest in the economy, investment in the environment.
The Chancellor's message is clear: we should have green policies which will support the continued development of the UK's industry, creating thousands of green jobs and billions of pounds in the UK economy every year.
We should do this not because climate change is a pressing issue at this time, but because the energy needs of this country are far greater than they are at present. The UK's energy demand is growing, the price of energy is rising, and even with a government which will cut fossil fuel power stations by 25% by 2020, the country will have to be the largest polluter in the European Union by 2050 to meet our needs.
But the fact is: we cannot turn back the clock on the progress we have made - or even get a little bit started back on time. So we should commit to making the transition to the low-carbon economy as fast as possible, and to taking on climate action against the evidence that we can achieve the most.

Curse of the pirates of the caribbean film series from a certain unknown source," wrote writer Dan Simmons. "If it's a reference to the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy, I can't think of a better place to drop it!"
Not knowing if Simmons' comments will cause any problems with the Disney franchise, the rumor continues and now more than one news outlet has confirmed the rumor, with The Hollywood Reporter claiming that the rumor stems from The Simpsons episodes 22 and 23: "The Curse of the Battersea Dogs."
On the episode, Homer and Ned head off into the sea to hunt down the Battersea Dogs for the crew, and while there, they come into the possession of a treasure trove of treasure, the Battersea Dog's Treasure. The Battersea Dog's Treasure will not be seen by the crew again. While the writers believe it's a reference to the episode, Simmons told E! News he doesn't think it's an accident since "The Curse of the Battersea Dogs is an episode that involves The Simpsons" and that's not a "joke." Simmons added that it's not "that the writers really thought a character would be involved in a treasure story. It's just that this episode was about treasure, and so this is an episode about treasure, too, and I'm pretty sure someone thought that this episode would involve a treasure."
Another possibility is that the Battersea Dog's Treasure is the "Dogs of the Caribbean" or "Babble of the Dog." One could also point out that Homer, Ned, Bart, Maggie, Maggie's neighbors Bart the Cat and Maggie Simpson are shown in the episode, which is pretty amazing considering that they are the crew member that Homer, Ned, and Roscoe and Roscoe's family were last seen in.
We have reached out to Disney and the producers of "The Curse of the Battersea Dogs," and will update the story when we receive a response.
