Nsw govt supports inquiry into seized koalas
The Australian Government is taking legal action against South African authorities after a farmer found himself under police guard as a large number of koalas were taken from their native habitat.
The koalas were returned to their natural habitat in the village of Katoomba by the Department of Agriculture and Conservation's Koala Management Advisory Service at Nsw airport in August, the Department of Environment and Heritage Management said in a statement.
The koalas, which are also referred to as Tasmanian white-throated koalas, were brought back to South Africa by the state in 2015 because they were considered to have not been sufficiently studied. The Government also hoped the koalas would be better placed to make a comeback after being out of the country for several years.
The government has lodged a complaint with the country's High Commission, alleging that the kraalen of this particular locality had not yet been examined by the government and that they had been removed without proper protection, the statement said.
According to the department, it will not take part in future operations or contracts which were made in any capacity that involved animals raised in South Africa for commercial purposes such as transport, grazing or hunting or that involved the exchange of animals between South Africa and other countries.
It may also affect the operation of the Department of Agriculture and Conservation if the koalas are taken by the South African Government, the statement said.
The koalas are protected under the Species at Risk Act, which was introduced by former president Thabo Mbeki and is aimed at curbing poaching and illegal killing of the animal.
This year alone, an estimated 800 million species, including more than 100 animal species, are listed as at-risk. In 2015, South Africa's National Parks department recorded the most recorded poaching cases of any country in the world. The country's National Parks department says that about 1,000 registered poaching deaths occur annually in the country.
More than 2.1 million koalas were killed last year, according to the Australian Parks and Wildlife Service.
The Department of Agriculture and Conservation said it is pursuing this matter with assistance from the South African Wildlife Service and police.
Katoomba is a region of approximately 10,000 hectares on the border between South Africa and South Africa's largest state, Cape Town, also known as Mozambique, with a population of around 3,000-4,000.
The local population has recently declined, the DOC said, due to increasing human-wildlife conflict and competition over natural resources and habitat.
